Kaithal, Aug 30 (UNI) All India Kisan Khet Mazdoor Congress chairman Shamsher Singh Surjewala today demanded immediate lifting of ban on export of Pusa 1121 variety of rice.
Addressing a press conference here today, he however advocated the continuation of the ban on export of other non basmati varieties of rice.
Rice Millers and commission agents of this region and other parts of the state have been on strike for the past about one week demanding lifting of ban on non basmati varieties of rice imposed by the Central government earlier this year.
Mr Surjewala said that PUSA 1121 was not distributed to consumers through public distribution system (PDS). Therefore, if the ban on export of this variety of rice was lifted the PDS would not be affected in any way.
''So the government's idea to contain inflation will not be hampered and farmers would get good price for at least this variety of paddy. Rice millers and commission agents too would benefit from this action of the government,'' he added.
