New Delhi, Aug 30 (UNI) A delegation of the Church of North India Synod called on Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities Mohammad Shafi Qureshi and Member Dr Zoya Hasan to apprise them of the incidents of violence in Orissa and to enlist support of the Commission to seek an end to violence and provide relief to the affected people.
The Chairperson briefed them of the action taken by the Commission in this regard and informed that the matter had already been taken up with the State government, an official release said here.
The delegation was informed that the Commission was in constant touch with the higher authorities in Orissa and the Chairperson and other Members of the Commission had a detailed meeting with the Home Minister to express its concern over the situation in the state.
Accordingly, the Home Ministry has given assurance of all possible help in this connection. The Commission has already asked the state Government to furnish a factual report on the cases of current violence and remedial action being taken by them in this regard.
Simultaneously, the Commission was also planning to depute its team to visit the affected areas to obtain first hand information on the situation and to explore the measures so that this kind of events do not occur in future, the release said.
