Tripura College Principal suspended for provocation in suicide

Agartala, Aug 28 (UNI) A Principal of a state owned college was suspnded today following his alleged involvement in provocating a girl student, who had an affairs with his son, to commit suicide.

The suspension came immediately after the West Tripura Chief Judicial Magistrate remanded Principal Nikhil Chandra Das of Bir Bikram Memorial College to 12 days in jail custody. The court also remanded his son Soumya to jail custody for same period.

The principal was later shifted to Agartala Govt Medical College with heart ailment.

Police said the principal was suspended form the services following a prima-facie case that Mishti Das, the daughter of Gopal Moni Das, Principal In-Charge of Amarpur Degree College, had committed suicide on August 9 last by consuming pesticide after her marriage proposal was rejected by Soumyamoy Das (28), a doctor of GNET Medical College here.

Nikhil Chandra Das, and his son Soumya were allegedly abetting the girl, the third-year botany student, to commit suicide, police said, "In the first week of this month, Mishti insisted on an early marriage but Soumya avoided a direct reply on two occasions but on subsequent proposal, he refused to have anything to do with her on the ground that his father would not agree to their marriage unless her father provided them a flat in the private apartment of the city," said officer-In-charge of Women PS Sima Biswas.

Meanwhile, Tripura Women Commission has accused the police of biasness to a suicide case of a housewife here on August 24. The Commission said police had been trying to guard the victim's in-laws.
