Madurai, Tamilnadu Aug 29 (UNI) Police resorted to lathi-charge to chase away a student mob that indulged in violence inside the American College, one of the oldest educational institutions in the country, here today.
The trouble started when a group headed by George Selvakumar, Vice Principal of the Institution, along with Bishop of the Diocese Christopher Asir came to the college to take oath as the Principal, after the Madras High Court bench issued an interim stay against the government order that reinstated T Chinnaraj Joseph Jayakumar as the Principal of the college.
A 500-strong student mob, supporters of Chinnaraj Joseph Jayakumar blocked George Selvakumar, Bishop and their supporters from entering into the Principals room. The situation became violent when the students pelted stones and wooden logs against the Bishop, George Selvakumar and their supporters, who retaliated. In the melee, an Armed Reserve Police Constable sustained injuries.
To quell the studentst, the police resorted to a lathi-charge, injuring several students. However, the students did not disperse and instead stayed inside the college, protesting against the swearing-in ceremony of Mr Selvakumar.
Meanwhile, Mr Selvakumar took oath as the Principal of the college amid tight security and later declared an indefinite holiday to the college.
A large number of policemen were deployed in and around the college to prevent further trouble, as the situation remained tense.
The college administration was in dire-straits, following apprehensions about the Church of South India Madurai-Ramnad Diocese attempting to take over the institution. Notwithstanding a peace committee meeting convened by the district administration, recently the stalemate still continues.
