Srinagar, Aug 28 (UNI) Curfew was today relaxed in phases on rotation in almost all parts of the Kashmir valley.
The relaxation period passed by and large peacefully, officials said.
Curfew was relaxed in the areas falling under Maisuma and Kralkhud police station areas from 1000 hrs to 1130 hrs which was later extended by one more hour.
This is for the first time that curfew was relaxed in these areas since it was imposed on August 24 morning at 0400 hrs. However, two hour relaxation had been given in phases on rotation in other parts of the city yesterday.
People in Maisuma and Kralkhud were seen out on streets in large numbers, purchasing essentials. Long queues could be seen outside the medical shops.
The headquarter of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and historic Lal Chowk also come under the jurisdiction of Maisuma police station.
Later, curfew was relaxed for two to three hours in almost all parts of the valley, including Srinagar, in rotation.
However, people complained that in some areas curfew was relaxed while it remained in force others which createsd problems.
Butcher and chicken shops opened for the first time after August 24.
At some places, roadside vendors sold every vegetable at Rs 10 per kg. ''We know people are facing problems, we have decided to sell our vegetables on less rates,'' they said.
However, the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) depots remained closed though the authorities had claimed that these would open during the relaxation period.
In some areas people said majority shops remained closed as shopkeepers were from other areas of the city who could not make it because of only two-hour relaxation.
