Mumbai, Aug 27 (UNI) Talks are on with the Centre for mining uranium in Meghalaya, where the mineral was available in abundance, Meghalaya public health engineering minister Alexander Hek said today.
The minister, who was here to woo investments into his state from industrialists here, told reporters several million tonnes of uranium has been found in Domicasiat town in west Khasi area of the state.
Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar had last week rushed to the state to create awareness about uranium mining and dispel environmental fears in the north-eastern state over mining of the strategic ore.
Mr Hek, a BJP minister in the colition government in Meghalaya, invited the industrialists to start cement, coal and other factories in the mineral rich north-eastern state.
The lone BJP member, who was elected for the third consecutive term, said the Congress did the propaganda that BJP was against the christians which is not the case. He said there was no ban on cow slaughter in the state even during NDA rule, as it is the staple food there.
He said the state is one of the main seven states which is sans terrorism.
