NIS now gears up for Commonwealth Games

Patiala, Aug 27 (UNI) The NIS, which had organised a number of national coaching camps for the Beijing Olympics is now gearing itself to take the responsibility of training sportspersons for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

According to a release issued by the NIS here today, Beijing Olympics bronze medallist pugilist Vijender Kumar and matman Sushil Kumar were trained at the NIS for participation in the Olympics.

Sushil was trained by SAI wrestling coach (Free-style) P R Sondhi.

For the Beijing Olympics, a number of national coaching camps were also held at the NIS here and SAI High Altitude Training Centre, Shilaroo, from time to time since 2006, the release said.

Pugilists Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar, who reached the quarter-final stage in the Olympics, were also trained at the NIS, under the supervision of SAI boxing coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu and Cuban coach B I Fernandez.

Even Abhinav Bindra was provided scientific counselling and support by the NIS scientists with regard to his injury and development of motor qualities, the released claimed.
