Justice Mathur appointed as Chairperson of Armed Forces Tribunal

New Delhi, Aug 27 : Justice Ashok Kumar Mathur, a retired judge of the Supreme Court has been appointed as Chairperson of the Armed Forces Tribunal.

The tenure of appointment of Justice Mathur as Chairperson in the Armed Forces Tribunal will be for a period of four years from the date of assumption of the charge of post or till he attains the age of 70 years whichever is earlier.

Born on August 7, 1943, Justice Mathur was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court on June 7, 2004 and retired from there on August 6.

The tribunal is meant to adjudicate on appeals against the verdicts of military courts on service-related matters.

The tribunal is the military version of the Central Administrative Tribunal that hears appeals of the government's civilian employees against disciplinary or other action taken against them.

Currently over 9,000 such appeals are pending in various high courts and the Supreme Court. These appeals will be transferred to the tribunal once it becomes functional.
