Lahore, Aug 27 (UNI) Hockey coach Khawaja Zakauddin has resigned following Pakistan's disastrous show at the Beijing Olympics.

Pakistan failed to reach the semifinals for the second Games in a row, eventualy ending up a disappointing eighth, their worst-ever Olympic finish.

''I am deeply disappointed at the team's disastrous performance,'' Zakauddin told mediapersons after arriving from Beijing yesterday.

''I take responsibility for the defeats and the poor finish and it's now time for new people to take over. I wish Pakistan hockey the best,'' he added.

Lamenting the declining standard of hockey in the subcontinent, Zakauddin said Pakistan needed to improve tremendously in order to compete with European teams.

''The semi-finalists - Germany, Spain, Australia and the Netherlands - were far more superior than us and we have to lift ourselves enormously to match them in future,'' he maintained.

Pakistan's eighth place finish at the Olympics means that they will not be able to compete in the annual six nation Champions Trophy later this year. They will also have to qualify for the World Cup to be held in India in 2010.
