Singur, Aug 26 (UNI) Unidentified persons attacked some Trinamool Congress workers in front of the Tata Motors' small car project site late last night even as the indefinite dharna spearheaded by Mamata Banerjee demanding return of the 400 acres land entered its third day today.
Singur police station Officer In-charge Priyabrata Bakshi said the party leaders had lodged a complaint regarding an attack on some partymen. He said a probe would be initiated into the matter.
A clash also broke out between the Trinamool supporters and the unidentified miscreants soon after the attack.
Later, police arrived on the scene and brought the situation under control.
Trinamool MP Mukul Ray alleged that CPI (M) cadres had attacked the youth wing workers of his party, sitting on platform number 21, constructed for staging the dharna, and damaged property. He demanded arrest of the miscreants responsible for the incident.
Mamata Banerjee yesterday alleged that an attempt was made to eliminate some followers as a lorry was about to run over some people on National Highway 2 near here.
The Trinamool chief had launched the indefinite ''satyagraha'' on August 24 to demand the return of the 400 acres land, ''forcibly acquired'' for the Tata Motors small car project, to the ''unwilling farmers''.
Meanwhile, thousands of vehicles were stranded on Durgapur Expressway as it remained blocked owing to the construction of 21 temporary platforms from Shahanapara of Gopalnagar to Joy Molla, over a stretch of three km, for staging the dharna.
Police had been diverting all the vehicles through the Delhi Road.
However, Kolkata remained cut off from Bardhaman and Bankura districts by roads for the third day today following the blockade on NH 2.
