Karnataka: Govt plans 33,000 water tanks
Bangalore, Aug 26: Karnataka Minor Irrigation Minister Govind Karjol, on Tuesday, Aug 26 said the department had planned to prepare a master plan for the development of 33,000 tanks in the state. Speaking to reporters, he said a meeting has been convened on September four to discuss various issues, including the setting up of a committee for recovering the tanks which have been encroached by land-grabbers in the city.
The city has 72 tanks with a capacity for providing irrigation facilities to 10,000 acres and the land-grabbers had encroached the tank-beds, worth Rs 50,000 crore in real estate terms. To a question, he said the department would initiate criminal proceedings against land-grabbers.
He said the department also plans to provide an irrigation facility for additional 50,000 acres of land in the coming year.
