Indian boxers will dominate 2010 CWG: Akhil

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) On a high despite narrowly missing out on a medal at Beijing, a confident Akhil Kumar said Indian boxers will dominate the field at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

''Indian boxers have shown the world what we are capable of doing. For the first time three boxers from India have entered the quarterfinals of the Olympics. We will win several medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2010,'' Akhil told UNI.

''The entire team worked together. Everyone supported each other till the end. This success belongs to the entire team,'' he added.

The 27-year-old from Bhiwani heaped praise on Abhinav Bindra who won the first ever individual gold medal for India.

''Abhinav Bindra is the one who won the gold. It is a historic achievement. It will inspire sportsmen in other disciplines to perform better,'' he said.

Akhil was surprised by the riotous reception at the airport and credited the media for the new found popularity of boxing.

''I have not got this kind of welcome before. All credit goes to the media. They supported us all through. And it is because of them that people from far off places have come to see us,'' he stated.

''Continue to inspire us like this. Continue to give respect and recognition to the players. The country will win many more medals in the future.'' UNI AB KP2038
