Goa govt congratulates Indian winners of Beijing Olympics
Panaji, Aug 26 (UNI) Goa Legislative Assembly today unanimously resolved to congratulate Sushil Kumar and Vijender Singh Kumar for winning bronze medals in men's 66 kg freestyle wrestling and middle weight (75 kg) boxing events respectively, at the Beijing Olympics.
The resolution was moved by Victoria Fernandes (Congress) immediately after question hour.
Cutting across party lines, the members urged the government to initiate steps so that Goans also achieve laurels for the country at the national and international events.
Sports minister Manohar Azgaonkar said the government would spare no efforts to encourage sports in the state. He also announced cash award of Rs 50,000 each to the bronze medalists.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, hailing the two Olympians, said it would further encourage the Indian youth to achieve many more medals.
