''Workers' lives put at stake in Singur,'' Mamata
Singur, Aug 25 (UNI) Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee today alleged that a conspiracy was hatched to kill her supporters as a lorry was about to run over some party activists resting on the National Highway Two near here in the wee hours.
Ms Banerjee was speaking here on the second day of her ''Satyagraha'' movement, launched yesterday to demand return of 400 acre of land from the Tata's Singur project to the farmers.
She said the vehicle fled the area immediately, alleging it was aimed at taking a bid on the lives of Trinamool Congress supporters.
Singur Police Station Office-in-Charge Priyobroto Bakshi said the party leaders had lodged a complaint in this regard, adding a probe would be initiated into the matter.
Meanwhile, the temporary platforms for staging dharna near the gate of Tata Motors' small car project had hampered the functioning of the unit, since no trucks could either exit or enter there.
Sources said around 150-200 lorries everyday move towards the site carrying loads.
The Singur Bhumi Ucched Protirodh Committee had made arrangements to feed 20,000 people. About 100 cooks and 300 volunteers were engaged for this purpose.
The Trinamool Congress chief repeatedly appealed to the supporters over microphone to abstain from any activity disrupting peace.
So far, no untoward incident had been reported.
