Saharsa, Aug 25 (UNI) JD(U) National President Sharad Yadav today made an aerial survey of the flood affected north Bihar districts and described the situation as 'catastrophic'.

Later speaking to newsmen here, Mr Yadav hailed the state government's efforts to tackle the situation and said every effort was being made to reach succour to the marooned.

The Army had already been called out and a number of helicopetrs and boats pressed into service in the flood affected areas, Mr Yadav said adding if required the state government would provide more boats and other relief materials.

Expressing concern at the breach in the Kosi embankments near the Indo-Nepal border, the JD(U) president said the state government had already taken steps to repair the embankments and directed the concerned authorities to prepare a detailed report.

''On the basis of the report the total cost would be estimated and the Centre would be asked to release necessary funds from the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund,'' Mr Yadav added.

He said during his recent visit to Kathmandu, he met the newly elected Prime Minister Prachanda and requested him to cooperate with India in terms of flood control measures.

''We hope a positive outcome would soon emerge,'' he observed.
