PM, Sonia to visit TN to attend Madras Varsity celebrations
Chennai, Aug 25 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi would visit Tamil Nadu during the first week of September to attend in various functions, TNCC President K V Thangabalu said today.
Talking to mediapersons here, he said Dr Singh and Ms Gandhi would be in the state from September four to six and participate in the 150th year celebrations of Madras University and the foundation stone laying ceremony of Salem steel plant.
The two leaders would also address a public meeting in Erode, Mr Thangabalu said, adding a detailed programme would be released tomorrow.
Meanwhile Mr Thang kabalu expressed his wish that the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) should come back to the DMK-led alliance, and said the PMK was still in the Congress fold at the national-level.
He decried the Left parties for describing the Congress as a sinking ship. ''Ours is a big ship, which will save others. It is the Left who were sinking after jumping into the sea,'' he charged.
It now appears that the Congress was trying to bring back the PMK into the DMK fold as Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram expressed hope that the PMK would come back to the DMK fold.
The DMK had snapped ties with the PMK in June, taking exception to PMK senior leader J Guru's derogatory speech against the DMK and its leadership in a party meeting.
