Indian golfers will be strong contenders at 2016 Olympics:Secy Gen

New Delhi, Aug 25 (UNI) Stating that golf will be a part of the 2016 Olympics, Indian Golf Union (IGU) Secretary General Wing Commander Satish Aprajit today said Indian golfers will pose a strong challenge for medals at the world's greatest stage.

Talking at the sidelines of a press conference of the LG Northern India Amateur Golf Championship, the fifth leg of LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour 2008-09, starting tomorrow at the Delhi Golf Club here, Aprajit, while lauding the Indian contigent to the Beijing Olympics who came out with three medals, said, ''Golf is very much going to be a part of the Olympics 2016. And as the trend is changing from cricket to other sports, we might do it in golf.'' ''The three medals this time has given a silver lining to the country sports. It will also give a boost to new born talents in various sports,'' he added.

The IGU Secretary General, while talking about the game, said, ''Golf is a game, where Indian has a physique to advance. And if more money is put into the game then the game will flourish.'' He stressed that the State and Central governments along with private companies should come forward and invest more money into the game. ''Its no longer a rich man game now,'' he added.

Aprajit further said there is a plan for training programs for the junior players, for which they have hired Australians to train the budding talents.

''Actually India has a huge nursery of junior golfers, which can produce tigers for the nation,'' he remarked.

Expressing that it was a priviledge to host the LG Northern India Amateur Chmpionship, Delhi Golf Club (DGC) captain C Chaudhri said, ''the DGC, known as the Mecca of Indian golf, is the maker of many national, international and future champions.'' ''Come the next five days, the DGC will witness challenges of top players junior players like Abhisek Jha, Gagan Verma, Vikram Rana, Manav Das, Saurav Bahuguna, Rashid Khan and others, making a total of 80 participants in the field,'' he said.

The DGC has brought out many ace players like Gaurav Ghei, Shiv Kapur...and will bring out more such talents to leave footprints for Golf in the world, Chaudri added.
