Kolkata, Aug 25 (UNI) Rejuvenated East Bengal bounced back in the reckoning, drubbing challenger Mohammedan Sporting 2-0 in Sahara Premier Kolkata Football League here today.
Sunil Chettri and Ashim Biswas struck home apiece in span of four minutes in the first half to give a vital win and take East Bengal in third spot with 18 points from ten matches, just two points behind Mohun Bagan and Md Sporting.
Red and gold looked deadly right from word go with reinforcement of four India internationals- Subrata Pal in goal, Renedy Singh in midfield and Rahim Navi and Sunil Chettri in frontline - in the replay match at Yuba Bharati Krinangan as their second leg tie was abandoned due to rain last week.
Nirmal Chettri, who scored a hattrick for India in a semifinal tie in the AFC cup in Hyderabad recently, headed home following a corner kick from Renedy Singh in the 23rd minute (1-0).
East Bengal did not get services of these four India internationals in first leg, which saw Md Sporting witn the match 3-1 in the same stadium.
Though the second goal was a field goal but it was almost similar to the previous one.
Syed Rahim Nabi after snatching from a defender sent an aerial ball to Ashim Biswas, who on the run headed home to give 2-0 lead to East Bengal.
The goal earned Ashim the Man-of-the-Match was third of this league and 6th against Md Sporting.
After second half coach Sabir Ali made some changes to give fresh blood in the black and white side. But it was not enough against a rejuvenated team.
The replacement of Jyoti Kumar against injured Theodore Sunday and Gautam Kujur instead of Tarak Roy had not helped Sabir Ali, who was very optimistic to regain the league after a gap of 26 years.
Md sporting last won Calcutta League in 1981 and Ali was the striker.
