Similarly, the broader-based Nifty index of National Stock Exchange touched a day's high of 4337.00 and a low of 4248.00, before finally closing with a positive gap of 43.60 points at 4327.45. The key indices extended gains in late trade as some heavyweight stocks, especially metal and banking, gained, brokers said.
Hindalco Industries and Sterlite Industries rose more than 4 per cent each, as metal prices rose on the London Metal Exchange (LME).
The market breadth was negative on BSE as 1414 shares declined as compared to 1,204 that advanced and 105 remained unchanged.
Mid-cap and Samll-cap index of BSE closed with a marginal difference. Almost all the sectoral indicies, barring PSU, ended in green. Metal index rose by 1.62 per cent, Banking was up 1.18 pc, Consumer Durables was up 1.13 pc, while FMCG and oil &gas index ended with a gain over one per cent in late trade.
Meanwhile, a turnover of Rs 4,041 crore was quoted on BSE today as compared to Rs 4,134.96 crore in the previous session.
Nifty August 2008 futures was at 4329, a marginal 1.55 point premium over spot closing of 4,327.45. NSE's futures&options (F&O) segment turnover fell to Rs 44332.45 crore from Rs 52004.66 crore yesterday.
Reliance Industries (RIL) rose 1.51 pc at Rs 2,245.65, off day's low of Rs 2191. The Bombay High Court yesterday suggested that the two Ambani brothers should approach their mother Kokilaben to settle the dispute.
Metal shares rose, tracking rally in global metal prices. Steel Authority of India surged 4.4pc to Rs 150.70, Sterlite Industries was up 4.34pc to Rs 626.75, Hindalco Industries gained 4.26pc to Rs 134.55, Hindustan Zinc was up 1.71pc to Rs 576.40, National Aluminum Company rose 1.15pc to Rs 387.90 and Tata Steel closed with a gain of about one per cent at Rs 594.45.
Other index frontliners, Hindustan Unilever surged 3.73 pc to Rs 244.85, HDFC was up 3.22 pc to Rs 2280.65, Bharat Heavy Electricals up 2.76 pc to Rs 1,715.95, Reliance Infrastructure was up 2.53 pc to Rs 978.85, Tata Power Company by 2.65pc to Rs 1,050.75, Infosys was up 1.84pc to Rs 1,695.05.
HDFC Bank gained 2.48pc to Rs 1194.70, ICICI Bank and State Bank of India Bank were marginally up at Rs 644.50 and Rs 1,346.25, respectively.
However, Satyam Computer Services declined 3.18pc to Rs 386.40, NTPC fell 2.54pc to Rs 169.10, Grasim Industries slid 1.85pc to Rs 1,929.10, Larsen&Toubro was down 0.88pc to Rs 2,604.90 and Wipro was down 0.93pc to Rs 417.55.
