Theni, Tamil Nadu Aug 22 (UNI) In a massive crack down against illegal arms to curb nefarious activities, police confiscated eight country-made guns and two revolvers during the past two days and arrested 11 persons in the naxalite-infested Theni district here.
Following Intelligence agency reports, that illegal fire-arms are in circulation in Theni,the police in coordination with State 'Q' branch are cracking down on the illicit arms, a senior police official said here.
Maoists made three attempts to establish an Arms training-base in recent times,he added.
The police are interrogating those arrested,to unravel links with the members of banned extremist organizations and also to find out how they got the lethal weapons. Police have also stepped up search operations in the deep jungles of Varushanadu hills and Murugamalai forests, bordering Kerala to unearth any illegal gun manufacturing factories in the region. The crack down will continue for another few days, the sources added.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar, rushed to Theni to conduct a detailed investigation into the seizure in the district.
