Pune, Aug 22 (UNI) Noted economist and former member of the Maharashtra Planning Commission Prof H M Desarda today blamed the State Government's policies and poor management for the drought-like situation and water scarcity in the state, stating this was purely a man-made crisis.
Delivering a lecture on ''Man Made Famine and water scarcity in Maharashtra'' at the Gokhale institute of politics and economics here, Prof Desarda said lack of rain was not the problem but poor management by the state government to handle the water situation year after year had created the situation.
Advocating implementation of rain harvesting and water shed development project on a big scale, Prof Desarda said the situation has to be taken seriously by the people of the state.
He said educating people and making aware of the rain harvesting method is a way of overcoming the water crisis. Without people's participation there would be no solution, Prof Desarda observed.
