MP angry over KIADB's land acquistion for Nagarjuna project
Udupi, Aug 21 (UNI) Ms Manorama Madhwaraj, MP, today expressed deep anguish over Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board(KIADB) not holding a public hearing before land acquisition as per the government notification and the Supreme Court direction for the 1015 MW thermal power project of Nagarjuna Power Company (NPC) .
Addressing a press conference here, she expressed deep concern over the new land acquisition notification issued by the KIADB to 300 families for laying pipelines for intake and discharge of treated water to the sea from Ulloor to Thenka Yermal sea shore.
The intake of sea water and discharge of the hot and contaminated water to the sea by the power plant would totally destroy the coast where the fishing was already a problem, she added.
She said instead of coal-based thermal projects, the government should seriously think about other energy sources such as solar, gas-based and nuclear.
Ms Manorama alleged that the state government had not followed transparent policy in case of Nagarjuna project. Although the 5 gram panchayats, taluk panchayat and zilla panchayat where the proposed project was coming up, had passed resolutions against it, the government was going ahead with the project, he added.
