Sydney, Aug 21 (UNI) A day after Cricket Australia (CA) announced that Brett Lee will miss the one-day series against Bangladesh, the Australian speedster here today confirmed that breakdown of his two-year marriage was the reason behind his decision to miss the upcoming series.
Yesterday CA announced that Lee will miss the three-match series for personal reasons. However, rumours immediately surfaced that it was because his two-year marriage with Liz Kemp was over.
Reports from number of newspapers today also pointed that the pacer, in a brief statement released through CA, has confirmed that marital problems was the reason behind his pulling out from the event.
''We have been caught by surprise as to how quickly our situation has become public,'' Lee said in the statement.
''It is with regret that I confirm todays media reports and that Liz and I have decided to separate.'' Asking everyone to respect their privacy, Lee said in the statement, ''Given the personal nature of the matter, I ask that you please respect our privacy as we attempt to deal with this sensitive situation.'' However, Lee said he would be making no further comment on the issue.
The 31-year-old married Kemp in June 2006 after Lee proposed to the pediatrist on a tour of South Africa. Their son, Preston, was born later that year.
The couple's relationship had been on the rocks for a couple of months now. However, the news broke just days after the fast bowler launched his own brand of mens underwear, a local daily newspaper reported.
The Australian side which was already without captain Ricky Ponting for the series due to his wrist surgery, will now miss Lee who will be replaced by debutant Brett Geeves from Tasmanian.
Opener Matthew Hayden has been named for the series, despite lingering concerns over an Achilles injury.
The three-match series, which is scheduled to be followed by the much troubled Champions Trophy in Pakistan, will be played in Darwin on August 30, September 3 and 6.
After Bangladesh series, Australia have a Test tour of India, where Lee would add to the star quotient of the team.
Lee will make his Bollywood debut very soon - Victory - a cricket based film, with Harman Baweja and Amrita Rao in leading roles which is being directed by Ajit Pal.
