Beijing, Aug 20 (UNI) For once a bye in the first round proved costly as Sushil Kumar faced Ukraine's Andry Stadnik in the pre-quarter finals and lost his bout 1-8 on technical points in the 66kg category of the Olympic free style wrestling competition here today.
However, despite the defeat, Sushil will fight against US's Dough Schwab in a repechage bout because of the bye.
Andriy proved too formidable for the Indian, though Sushil put up a better show in the first round one in which he trailed 1-2.
In the next round, Sushil virtually threw in the towel as he found Andriy too strong. The Ukraine outclassed his rival who scurried for cover.
In a desperate move Sushil tried to avoid coming into contact with Andriy but could not do so because his rival was too fast and agile.
Andriy sensing victory threw himself on Sushil who just could not wriggle out of his rival's vicious strangle hold.
The bout ended in two rounds with Sushil Kumar beaten comprehensively.
Coach P R Sondhi later admitted that Andriy was far superior, ''but I have no regrets the way Sushil Kumar fought.'' ''Earlier in the round, Andriy was doing much better than him and so this was on his (Sushil's) mind in the last period,'' Sondhi said adding, ''Andriy was just a better wrestler.'' UNI HSB CS DS1130
