Dhaka, Aug 20 (UNI) Rajshahi Univesity in northern Bangladesh was today shut down sine die following a series of clashes between students and local people near the campus.
The university authorities also asked the residential students to vacate all the dormitories by this noon.
The syndicate of Rajshahi University took the decision at an emergency meeting with acting Vice-chancellor Prof Mamnul Keramat in the chair.
A series of clashes that broke out between the two groups created a tense situation on the RU campus and nearby area after several students reportedly beat up a bus conductor at Binodpur Bazar last night over a ticket-related hassle.
The clashes left about a dozen people injured.
Protesting the incident, local people put barricades on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway at Binodpur Bazar last night, blocking the traffic for two hours on the busy road.
Campus sources said the clashes occurred as RU students were irate over one of their fellow students not getting a seat in a bus despite collecting ticket for travelling to Dhaka.
Some 400 students of the university staged demonstrations on the campus over the incident.
