Paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal bows out

By Staff
Beijing, Aug 20: Indian paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal failed to advance to the third round after losing to Austria's Weixing Chen in the men's singles event at the Beijing Olympics.

The Austrian comfortably won the match 11-5, 14-12, 11-2, 8-11 and 10-12 at the Peking University Gymnasium. Sharath started the proceedings on a shoddy note as he lost the opening game 5-11. Sharath kept his cool and went on neck to neck in the second game but eventually lost it 14-12 after wasting a crucial game point.

The Austrian took the stanglehold of the match as he claimed the third game 11-2 after leading 6-0 initially. Gritty Sharath battled hard in the fourth game as he gave a tough fight and led 8-5 at one stage. Sharath benefitted from his hard work as he sealed the game 11-8 in his favour.

Chen was in good touch as he opened up well in the fifth game by picking up three crucial points. Sharath wilted under pressure as his moves weren't gone his way.

Chen maintained his lead by keeping up his good performance but Sharath upped the ante of his game as he levelled the scores 10-10 after trailing 6-9. But all his efforts went in vain as he lost the fifth game 10-12.

The Austrian strategiesed his encounter so well as he took the time-out whenever Sharath took hold of proceedings. Earlier, Achanta Sharath Kamal won first round match after beating Alfredo Carneros of Spain 4-2 on Tuesday.
