Kohima, Aug 20: Assured by Governor K Sankaranarayanan to reserve the seats for women in the municipal and town councils, the Nagaland State Women Commission (NSWC) now faces challenge from the representatives of the civic bodies as they have opposed the idea.

A delegation of NSWC yesterday met the governor at Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum demanding 33 per cent reservation in the civic bodies.

Addressing the women delegation, the Governor said a bill for the amendment, Nagaland Municipal Act 2006, had been passed by the State Assembly to provide women reservation in bodies.

The memorandum was signed by 170 women leaders, representing different tribal units, NGOs and women cell of political parties.

Meanwhile, the representatives of civic bodies from across the state met at Dimapur yesterday and unanimously resolved to oppose 33 per cent reservation.

They also resolved to approach the government to revoke the amendment in the Municipal Act.
