Power remains off in UNMO chalo routes in Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 18 (UNI) The Power Development Department (PDD) snapped power supply in the area around the venue of public meeting organised by the Coordination Committee, headed by both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) spearheading the present agitation demanding opening of Jehlum valley road for trade following alleged economic blockade and violence in Jammu.

Thousands of people from different parts of the valley are arriving at Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) ground in buses, trucks and other vehicles besides motorcycles, scooters and on foot holding green and black flags.

Since most of the processionists are travelling on the top of trucks and buses, there was apprehension them getting in contact with the live wires on the route, the PDD sources said.

They said to avoid any accident due to contact with the live wires by the processionists, it was decided to snap the power supply to entire area.

However, it had affected the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and media organistions on the Exchange Road, who had to switch over to generators.

Power supply was also snapped to Sonawar, Bonamsar, Iqbal colony, Rammunshi Bagh, Dalgate, Moulana Azad road, Residency road and other adjoining areas as a precautionary measure.
