Akhil Kumar on the threshold of history
{image-akhil kooomar_18082008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Beijing, Aug 18: India's hopes of a first Olympic boxing medal are high, with three boxers making it to the quarterfinals. Akhil Kumar, whose win over Vodopyanov came on India's Independence Day, will face Moldova's Veaceslav Gojan on Monday, Aug 18 evening (5pm IST) for a place in the last four.
The exuberant Akhil Kumar will not be satisfied with anything less than gold. High on confidence after knocking down world Champion Sergey Vodopyanov of Russia, Akhil will have a relatively easy opponent in Veaceslav Gojan of Moldova Monday to enter the medal hunt.Akhil has not faced Gojan before but the boxer says he has seen enough recordings of the Moldovan. Akhil, who had outboxed 2005 world silver medallist Ali Hallab of France in the first round, seems India's best bet out of the three boxers who have qualified to the quarters.
