Couple nabbed for murder and lifting vehicles
Shillong, Aug 17 (UNI) Inter-state car lifters consisting of a couple involved in killing of more than five drivers after hijacking vehicles were arrested in Silchar by Assam police will be brought to Shillong for interrogation, police said today.
The couple identified as Raju Barman and Remita Basuamatry will be handed over to Shillong Police on Tuesday to establish their involvement in similar crimes here. The duo was arrested in Silchar after the Meghalaya police provided its counterpart with the information.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (City) Claudia A Lyngwa told UNI here that the couple had hijacked a Meghalaya tourist taxi from Guwahati and tried to kill the driver in July. The driver, Badal Singh, perhaps, the oldest tourist taxi driver in Meghalaya, however, managed to escape after he was thrown into a gorge between at Pynursla village.
However, the couple fell into a trap of the Silchar police after Meghalaya police alerted that the two most wanted car lifters planned to whisk away another tourist van, which they hired from Shillong to Silchar.
''Their arrest would surely throw some light into carjacking in Meghalaya. We will get to know about the extend of involvement of the couple and their gang once we interrogate them,'' Ms Lyngwa said, adding that the couple have killed more than five drivers in Guwahati alone.
In the past there have been many cases of mysterious disappearance of vehicles from Shillong and the drivers were found murdered later on.
