Silchar, Aug 17 (UNI) A local Congress leader was gunned down by unidentified assailants in remote Harishnagar village under Katlicherra police station in Hailakandi district of Assam, police said here today.

A gang of miscreants shot dead secretary of Harishnagar Mandal Congress Committee Ibrahim Ali Laskar (35) with country-made guns last night while he was on way to his house at Bhagawanpur village, about 150 km from here.

Police said the assailants pumped seven bullets into his body when he was crossing a bamboo bridge on a rivulet, only 100 metres away from his home.

The miscreants, after killing him on the spot, escaped under cover of darkness.

A massive manhunt was launched in Katlicherra to nab the assailants.

Altogether four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident so far, police added.

However, the motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, Assam Excise and Border Area Development Minister Gautom Roy, who is also the local MLA, condemned the murder and directed police to nab the assailants immediately.
