Two killed in police firing in Assam
Guwahati, Aug 16 (UNI) Two persons were killed and as many injured when police opened fire at an unruly mob, who ransacked a security check post in Assam's Karbi Anglong district today.
Official sources said a mob tried to lay siege the Mailu check post under Kheroni police station after policemen picked up a lawyer following a confrontation during the frisking this evening.
The protesters did not pay heed to the police warning and went on rampage at the check point, prompting the security men to resort to firing, killing two persons.
Police confirmed the casualty and said two others suffered serious injuries.
Eyewitnesses said the number of injured persons could be more.
The dead were identified as Ram Singh Chouhan and Jai Singh Gaur, both civilians.
It was not immediately known what flared-up the incident.
Till the filing of this report, situation was tense in the area as the protesters refused to disperse despite the police action.
