Kolhapur, Aug 15 (UNI) Three villages in Shirol tehsil of the district -- Rajapur, Rajapurwadi and Khidrapur -- continued to be marooned today despite abatement of rain fury since yesterday.

There is no relief for these villages as the water level of the Krishna river continues to rise following discharge of surplus water from the Koyana dam into the river bed, the sources in the district collectorate said here today.

Despite the water surge in the Krishna river, the people residing in the three villages were not willing to shift to safer places.

However, they had started shifting to the relief camps after the authorities persuaded them.

The water level of the Krishna river near Shirol has reached up to 62.11 ft late this afternoon, the sources said, adding, about 47,943 cusecs of water was being discharged from the Koyana dam into the river bed.

The water level of the Panchaganga river has started receding since yesterday and is flowing at 44 ft, one feet above the danger mark at the Rajaram weir, the sources informed.

Total 217.4 mm of rainfall was recorded in the district during the last 24 hours. Of which, Chandgad tehsil recorded the highest 68 mm, the sources added.
