Former IGCER Director passes away

Chennai, Aug 15 (UNI) Distinguised metallurgist and former Director of the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR), 79-year-old Prof C V Sundaram passed away here early today due to old age.

Born in Ottappalam, Kerala, he was an elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian National Academy of Engineering and Indian Academy of Sciences.

Sundaram also served as the President of the Indian Institute of Metals and of the Indian Nuclear Society. Besides, he was the Chief Editor of the Transactions of Indian Institute of Metals.

For his outstanding scientific and technological achievements, the Government honoured him with the Sanjay Gandhi Award and also with the Padma Bhusan Award.

Sundaram received many other prestigiuos awards including National Metallurgists' Day Award, Platinum Jubilee Alumnus Award of Indian Institute of Science, INS Homi Bhaba Lifetime Achievement Award of Indian Nuclear Society and Lifetime Achievement Award from Ministry of Steel and Mines, Govt of India.

He pursued his career as an opportunity to serve science.

Inspired by the thoughts of several leaders such as Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi he was always keen to foster talent and develop new leaders for the future.

He used to take pride in things that are Indian and was keen to expand frontiers in Science and Technology in India.
