Kashmir celebrates 61st Independence day

Srinagar, Aug 15: The 6st Independence day was on Friday, Aug 15 celebrated in the Kashmir valley under unprecedented security arrangements.

The main function was held at Bakshi Stadium where Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra unfurled the National flag and took salute at the march past presented by security forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Fire Service and students of police school.

There was however, no cultural programmes.

Security forces wearing bullet proof jackets holding automatic weapons were deployed in and outside the Bakshi stadium to foil any attack.

Sharp shooters could be seen on highrise buildings keeping close watch with the help of binoculars.

Night and foot patrolling have been intensified in the localities adjoining the stadium to thwart any militant attempt to fire rockets and grenades.

Militants in the past has been firing rockets and grenades towards the Bakshi stadium on Independence day and Republic day functions.

Security forces had sealed all roads leading to the stadium. Reports of Independence day celebrations were also received from other districts and tehsil headquarters.
