High court orders retrial of suspected Bangladeshis

Guwahati, Aug 14 (UNI) Guwahati High Court today ordered retrial by the Foreigner's Tribunal the 18 Bangladeshis, who pleaded that they were actually Indians but wrongly declared Bangladeshis because of lack of evidence as well as procedural fault.

These 18 petitioners were part of the 52, who were declared foreigners by a single bench of Guwahati Court last month.

The 90-page judgment sparked renewed agitation on infiltration.

The petitioner of the 18 petitioners were heard by Chief Justice J Salameshwar and Mr Justice Hrishikesh Roy.

The court asked the petitioners to surrender before the Superintendent of Police of Barpeta within seven days and also directed the Foreigners Tribunal to reinvestigate their case and submit the findings to the court.
