Security in Assembly to be stepped up: Speaker

Puducherry, Aug 13: Puducherry Assembly Speaker R Radhakrishnan on Wednesday, Aug 13 said steps would be taken to further strengthen the security in the Legislative Assembly premises.

In an informal chat with newspersons here, Mr Radhakrishnan, who returned here after participating in the Commonwealth Speaker's conference at Kuala Lampur, said the conference in which he delivered speech on the topic of ''urban development and slackening of rural areas '' was fruitful.

When pointed out about the threat to Education Minister M O H F Shajahan to kill him in a bomb attack at his office in the Legislative Assembly premises, the Speaker said the matter would be taken up with the Director General of Police (DGP) here and a meeting of top officials would be convened to further strengthen security in the assembly arena.

Mr Radhakrishnan also congratulated shooter Abhinav Bindra for winning the gold medal in Beijing Olympics.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Rangasamy, also congratulated Mr Bindra for winning the gold and creating history.
