Nikhil overpowers Amit to enter pre-quarters

Mumbai, Aug 13 (UNI) Thane's Nikhil Kolhatkar, after a rather slow start, overpowered city suburban's Amit Kshatriya in three pulsuating games before he made to the men's singles pre-quarterfinals in the first Maharashtra State senior selection badminton tornament, hosted by MIG Club here today.

After dropping the first game, Nikhil turned the table in the second game, which he won with ease and then took the decider in tense moments. Nikhil prevailed at 19-21, 21-14, 21-19.

Yogesh Padukone, of Greater Mumbai, who is now more into coaching juniors, showed glimpses of his strokeplay while scoring over another seasoned fighter Murli Subramaniam to join Nikhil in the round of 16. Yogesh triumphed at 21-14, 11-21, 21-14.

Varun Khanvilkar, a hard-hitting strokeplayer from Pune, had some hiccups in the first round against junior Eshan Naqvi of Thane, which he won 21-10, 18-21, 21-8. But then in the next round against his city mate Hrishikesh Kulkarni, he was in control before making the pre-quarters with a 23-21, 21-9 win.
