Fresh violence in Srinagar injures 20

About 20 people were injured in fresh incidents of violence. Meanwhile, the toll on Tuesday, Aug 12 police and security force firing has risen to 15 with the death of two more injured in the hospital on Wednesday, Aug 13.

Faishal Ahmad Dar, who was injured in police firing at Bagh-e- Mehtab and Hafiz Ullah wounded at Qamarwari, succumbed in the hospital. Their nimaz Jinazah was offered at historic Jamia masjid before they were laid to rest.

Immediately after the curfew was relaxed at 0800 hrs this morning for three hours, people at Safa Kadal in the downtown took to streets demanding opening of the Muzaffarabad road for trade and free movement.

Raising slogans against the security forces for firing on unarmed processionists in the valley, the demonstrators wanted to march towards the main city.

However, security forces and police burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse them, who were regrouping again and again and pelting stones on security forces.

The mob also set on fire a motorcycle of a police personnel. Later, police fired in the air to disperse them. About ten people were injured in the stone pelting and bursting of teargas shells.

Police also fired in the air at Fateh Kadal, where a mob pelted stones on police and security force personnel. At Tengpora, a mob torched a tanker parked in the area. A resident from New Colony Batmaloo Abdul Hamid said security forces deployed in the area fired several rounds in the air without any provocation immediately after 1100 hrs when the curfew relaxation was over. The security personnel were asking people to remain indoor as curfew had been reimposed.

He said security forces Tuesday, Aug 12 damaged window panes of more than 20 houses in the colony without any provocation. Wind screens of about a dozen parked vehicles, including three wheelers were also damaged by the security forces deployed there, he added.

Reports of massive protests and bursting of teargas shells were also received from other parts of the city, including Bemina, Barthana, Lawapora, Zampa Kadal, Batabone, Chota Bazar, Natipora and Chanapora and several other localities.

More than 12 people were wounded in these places, source said.
