CPI (M) wants DSP sacked for 'brutal attack' on TU leader
Chennai, Aug 13 (UNI) Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tamil Nadu Secretary N Varadarajan today demanded dismissal of Cuddalore Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for ''brutally attacking a trade union leader, affecting his eye sight.'' In a statement here, Mr Varadrajan said about 200 workers, led by Cuddalore CITU leader Sukumaran, were holding an agitation pressing the implementation of a charter of demands before a private factory in SIPCOT on August 11 when the police led by DSP Stephen Yesupatham 'launched an indiscriminate attack on them.' The workers were holding demonstration in a peaceful manner when the police attacked them to please the industry. Thirty workers were injured,he claimed.
The DSP targeted Trade Union Leader Sukumaran during the 'brutal attack.' He suffered injuries in his right eye and faced the risk of losing eye sight, Mr Varadarajan claimed.
Condemning the police attack, he wanted the Tamil Nadu Government to inquire into the incident and place the DSP under suspension, before initiating further action against him.
Mr Varadarajan also wanted the government to withdraw the cases filed against the workers and take action against the factory management for not respecting labour laws.
