20 killed, 61 injured in two building collapses in Mumbai
Mumbai, Aug 13 (UNI) Twenty people, including seven women and nine children, were killed and 61 others injured when a portion of a 70-year-old building and the roof of a school collapsed here today following heavy rainfall in the last few days.
With no let up in the rains, the fire brigade personnel had a tough time in removing the debris and looking for survivors from the three-storeyed building, a portion of which, caved in at 0600 hrs at Kumbharwada in Bhendi Bazar in South Central Mumbai.
Dr Shashi Pawar of J J Hospital, where 36 residents of the building were admitted, told mediapersons that most of them were in a state of shock.
A large number of them suffered bone and head injuries. Four of the injured have been sent to Nair Hospital for CT scan.
There were 14 families in the building, according to the sources in disaster control room of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
In another incident at Byculla in South Central Mumbai, 25 students of St Anioto D'Souza High School sustained minor injuries after a portion of the roof collapsed at around 1130 hrs. The injured students have been admitted to a private hospital, the sources added.
