Quakes crack Chatham bridge in Andamans
Port Blair, Aug 12 (UNI) Sunday's 6.2 tremor has cracked the Chatham bridge which connects Chatham Island with Port Blair, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands authorities confirmed today.
The bridge, which is now closed for heavy vehicles, has cracked on three places by the quake, Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman S N Jha told UNI.
The Island has second biggest wharf for the island-mainland and inter-island shipping and is the nearest from Port Blair, connected through Chatham Bridge.
The bridge is under the maintenance of Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works (ALHW).
Closure of the crucial road for heavy vehicles has brought bad news for hundreds of daily ferry passengers who come to Port Blair everyday for their job from nearby islands.
