Kathmandu, Aug 12 (UNI) A policeman in Western Nepal sold his wife and son to an elderly man at Rs 12,000 to marry another woman, local media reports said here today.

Nepal police constable Keshav Nath of Mahendranagar-9, Kanchanpur district in far western Nepal allegedly sold his wife and five-year-old son to 65-year-old Ganga Dutta Nath of Baitadi district, Kantipur reported.

The police constable, who was posted at Surkhet district in Western Nepal, reached an agreement with Gangadutta, who has a wife and seven daughters. Gangadutta was in search of a second wife to have a son so he paid Rs 12,000 to the constable.

Keshav Nath was already married to a woman in another district so he wanted to get rid of his wife and son.

The murky episode unfolded as the sold woman Mina's uncle lodged a complaint at the District Police Office demanding justice for the 'sold woman.' However, Mina (25) was totally unaware of the plan when her husband left her with the man.

''He took me to Gokuleshwor saying he was recently transferred there and told me that he would come back after making a telephone call. But he never returned,'' she said.

The DPO said police have started investigations into the incident after taking Gangadutta and Mina into custody. But the person at the center of the bizarre episode, the police constable Keshav, is still at large.

Locals said Keshav received Rs 12,000 from Gangadutta on the condition of leaving his wife with him. Gangadutta accepts that Keshav had paid but refutes the marriage.
