TN: Students stage protests against private university

Chennai, Aug 12: Students of law colleges in the city, Salem, Tiruchirapalli and Tirunelveli on Tuesday, Aug 12 observed a fast and staged demonstrations to protest the move by a private university in Tamil Nadu to start a law college.

The students also demanded action against police personnel responsible for ordering lathicharge against the students of Tirunelveli Law College when they began an agitation last week.

While the students of the Tirunelveli Law College launched an indefinite fast, those belonging to Tiruchirapalli Law College continued their fast for the second day on Tuesday, Aug 12.

Meanwhile, the government ordered the indefinite closure of Salem Law College after the students began an agitation inside the premises yesterday.

Undettered, the students continued protest demonstration in front of the college premises on Tuesday, Aug 12.

Similar protest was also launched by the students of Madras Law College here.The students were protesting against Thanjavur-based Sastra University starting a law college.

After the Tamil Nadu Government refused no objection certificate, the University had obtained permission from the Supreme Court to start the college.

Making it clear it did not give permission to the University to start the college, the Tamil Nadu Government assured the students that it would get itself impleaded in the case before the Apex Court and convey the sentiments of the students.
