Five gates of Tighara dam opened
Bhopal, Aug 11: After nine years, five gates of Tighara reservoir, the main source of drinking water in Gwalior city, were opened following heavy rains in the catchment area even as most parts of Madhya Pradesh received heavy rains in last 24 hours.
Official sources said that 1200 cusec per hour is being released from the dam. Its capacity is 740 feet but the gates were opened when the water level notched 738.70 feet.
Earlier, water was discharged from the dam in 1982 and 1999. Villagers in the downstream, including in Morena district, were alerted due to discharge of water from the dam. Meteorological Department said that due to low-pressure area over eastern Madhya Pradesh, the state is likely to receive heavy rains in next 24 hours.
Total amount of rainfall in the last 24 hours includes Guna nine cm, Jabalpur, Ratlam and Mugawali eight cm each, Betul seven cm, Gwalior six cm.
