After opening firm at 15,430.31, the Sensex marched past the level of 15,500 and touched a day's high at 15,520.71, gained 352.89 points on sustained buying interest even as Nifty surged 95.70 points to touch a day's high of 4,625.20 and then closed with a positive gap of 90.90 points at 4,620.40 in late trade. The key indicies pared gains as rate sensitives shares including realty, banking, auto and oil &gas stocks were in good demand. Fall in crude oil price below to a level below USD 115 per barrel and positive cues from European markets boosted the market sentiments, brokers said.
The top gainers list included Jaiprakash Associates up by 7.68pc Rs 197.60, Reliance Infra up 6.86pc at Rs 1102.40, ICICI Bank up by 5.74pc at 770.75.
BSE Midcap Index gained 95.71 points or 1.63pc at 5,982.68 and Small-Cap rose by 89.61 points or 1.25pc at 7,271.35. Total turnover traded in markets was quoted at Rs 57,586.55 crore, included Rs 12,421.49 crore from NSE Cash segment, Rs 39,699.28 crore from NSE F&O and balance Rs 5,465.78 crore from BSE Cash segment.
Overall, market breadth remained positive throughout the day as about 1867 shares advanced while 1103 shares declined and about 190 shares remained unchanged.
Asian markets ended mixed. Nikkei gained 1.99 pc, while Straits Times, Kospi closed with a marginal gain. Taiwan index dropped 1.62pc while Shanghai lost 5.21pc, Jakarta Composite slid 2.82pc and Hang Seng closed slightly down as compared to previous close.
European markets were trading marginally higher.
Back home, SBI moved up 4.7pc to Rs 1,593. HDFC and HDFC Bank moved up 2.2pc each to Rs 2,570 and Rs 1,309, respectively. Maruti surged over 5pc to Rs 716.
ONGC and Reliance Communications gained over 3.5 pc each at Rs 1,103 and Rs 454, respectively.
Reliance advanced 3.3pc to Rs 2,326. Mahindra&Mahindra was up 2.8pc to Rs 590 and BHEL gained 2.5pc at Rs 1,827.
However, Sterlite slipped BY 2pc to Rs 625. TCS and Tata Steel were down by one per cent each at Rs 834 and Rs 645, respectively.
