Punjab announces Rs 1 cr award to Abhinav Bindra

Chandigarh, Aug 11 (UNI) The Punjab Government today announced an award of Rs 1 crore to ace shooter Abhinav Bindra for winning the Gold Medal in the 10-Meters Air Rifle shooting event at the Beijing Olympics today.

While announcing the award, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said he had brought glory to the entire nation. ''Bindra's achievement would give a major boost to Indian sport. He would surely become a role model for the budding players of our country to promote sports at international fora,'' he said.

The Chief Minister said the Government would honour him on his return from Beijing and would give the award money of Rs 1 crore as per State Government's Sports Policy.

The Chief Minister also called up Bindra's father, Dr A S Bindra, and other family members for his superb achievement.

Meanwhile, Member Parliament and SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, Information and Public Relations Minister Bikram Singh Majithia and Local Government and Industries Minister Manoranjan Kalia also congratulated Bindra for winninig the gold medal.
