Kolkata, Aug 11 (UNI) Title defenders Mohun Bagan opened their second leg campaign on a happy note, edging past a fighting Peerless Sports Club (PSC) 2-1 in the Sahara Premier Football League at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today.
The win took Mohun Bagan to the top of the table with 19 points from eight matches, two points a drift of nearest rival Mohammedan Sporting, who settled for a goalless draw with Railway Football Club on Saturday.
PSC surged ahead with an Emannuel Junior header on 21st minute.
He beat sturdy Peter Odafe in the air to head home beating Sangram Mukherjee at the far end.
The goal also earned him an immediate booking from referee Kashinath Sen as he opened his blue T-shirt to celebrate the goal.
Under the FIFA rules, a player cannot open his shirt during play.
Stung by the reverse, Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa brought in Kartick Kiskoo in the attacking line and got an equaliser nine minutes later.
P C Lalampuiya, following a throw-in from Peter Odafe just mangaged to toe the ball in from a melee 1-1. With this goal, the Mizo boy became the top scorer with seven goals followed by Mohameddan Sporting's Theodore Wrobeh's six.
Furthermore, Jose Ramirez Barreto buttressed the lead to 2-1 into the seven minutes of the second half with a left footer.
PSC remained at bottom of the table after getting one point from eight matches.
