Bopanna wins ATP Countrywide Classic tennis doubles

By Staff

California, US, Aug 11 (UNI) Indian Davis cupper Rohan Bopanna and his American partner Eric Butorac clinched the Countrywide Classic ATP doubles crown by defeating Travis Parrot of the US and Dusan Vemic of Serbia 7-6(5), 7-6(5) at the UCLA here last night.

The Indo-US pair played consistent tennis to gain a hard-fought victory.

It was the fifth-time lucky for 44th-ranked Bopanna as this was his maiden ATP doubles victory after having made four previous ATP doubles finals.

Earlier, on Saturday evening, Bopanna and Butorac had advanced to the finals with a 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-5 victory over Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina and Fabio Fognini of Italy.

''It feels absolutely fantastic to win an ATP event. This is something I have worked hard for and I will now look to captialise on my performance here and will aim to keep performing well. I am confident that more good results are to follow,'' Bopanna said in a statement.

The Tour victory is expected to further boost the Indian tennis ace's doubles ranking to career-high levels.

Bopanna's career highest doubles ranking was 43 in the Stanford ATP Doubles Rankings released on July 14, 2008.
