New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) Expressing their happiness over Abhinav Bindra's victory in the men's 10-metre air rifle event at Beijing, the BJP today said the victory had ended India's 28-year-long gold medal drought at the Olympics.
Leader of Opposition L K Advani and BJP President Rajnath Singh in their separate statements expressed the party's happiness over Bindra's sterling achievement.
''I join the countrymen hoping that our sportspersons will bring several more medals both in individual and team events,'' Advani said.
Singh said that Bindra had added a golden chapter to the history of Indian sports by winning the first ever gold in individual category at the Olympic Games. This stupendous achievement has lifted the spirits of the entire country signifying the potential of the youth in shaping India's future.
BJP spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the whole nation was proud about the success of one of its proudest sons. Although, India had won gold medals in the past for the Team event in the Olympics it had to wait for 112 years to see an Indian to win a gold in an individual event.
